NOTABLE PEOPLE OF SCOTLAND COUNTY RUSS ADAMS MLB Toronto Blue Jays infielder BRENT BUTLER former Major League Baseball infielder BUCKY COVINGTON American Idol Season 5 finalist and country musician WES COVINGTON former Major League Baseball outfielder ROBERT DOZIER college basketball player LORINZA HARRINGTON former NBA basketball player • Darrel "BJ" Gibson, Board of Education member — Scotland County is made special in its unique ability to be large enough for there to be people you don't quite know, yet small enough for citizens to feel like family. I am grateful to be a part of this community of family. • Garland Pierce, State House of Representatives — The continued success of community programs that have brought people together. Examples: Scotland High School football, Christmas celebrations, worship services and other non-profit efforts that people have contributed to, that have made a difference in the lives of Scotland County citizens. I think these types of efforts will continue to bring us closer together in 2020 and beyond. • Mary Jo Adams, Laurinburg City Council—My answer to that question is her people! I have said many times that the people of Laurinburg/Scotland County are our greatest resource. We celebrate with each other in good times and rally around each other in times of natural disasters, tragedy and loss. Many citizens support the fundraising efforts of local organizations and volunteer every day in our community. ’Tis the Season is just one recent example of the willingness of the citizens of Laurinburg/Scotland County to work together to make good things happen for everyone. • Meredith Bounds, Scotland County Schools public information officer — Scotland County is a special place for so many reasons, but if I am forced to pick just one thing, I would have to say it's the people of our community that make it so wonderful. The phrase "small but mighty" always comes to mind when I think about my hometown. Geographically, Scotland County is one of the smallest counties in the state. What we may lack in geographical size, we make up 10-fold in heart. Our diversity is our strength and when the cause is good and the need is great, this community bands together like none I've ever witnessed. Whether it's pulling for the Scots on Friday nights or raising funds for one of the many worthwhile causes our community supports, the power of the people of Scotland County is what shines brightest and what makes us so special! • Leon Gyles, Scotland County Memorial Library director — The answer is the people! I have lived in places all around the country as a result of my military career and never lived anywhere else where the members of the community were so caring about helping one another and working to improve the community. Just look at Main Street during the holidays and you'll understand what I mean. Everyone came together in such a beautiful way.
