YOUNG COMPANY SETTLING INTO COMMUNITY M ary Margaret Murray learned to run a construction business while working for many years with her father, the late John Thames, who owned Thames Construction. People throughout the community quickly got to know about M2. The business was called upon heavily in late 2018, when Hurricane Florence damaged buildings and homes all over the region. In 2018 Murray and her husband, Blake Murray, followed in John Thames’ footsteps by starting their own company. Based in Laurinburg, M2 Building Company has provided residential and commercial construction services since 2018. “People were dealing with leaks that were causing interior damage,” Mary Margaret said. The couple had an ideal background for starting their new company. Mary Margaret was a seasoned construction professional, and Blake already had entrepreneurial ventures on his resume. One of their most important tasks at that time was finding an office space. “We wanted to have a central location,” Mary Margaret said. And that’s what they got. M2 is now located at 309 S. Main St., in the heart of downtown Laurinburg. M2 was contracted for many renovations and repairs during that time. The business specializes in those tasks, as well as additions, roofing, masonry, concrete and demolition. The company is still young, but its portfolio already includes several big local projects. M2 was recently working on the new Scotland County Register of Deeds office. Other recent projects include the construction of an electrical shed for the county’s public works department, as well as a roof replacement at the local wastewater treatment plant. The company balances its projects with its involvement in the community. In December, for example, M2 personnel helped Cub Scouts Pack 447 build birdhouses.
