“
Why we support Partners:
Partners is about preservation and community, and preserving these sacred places that are landmarks to so many more people than just the congregation.”
Andrea and Tobin Tracey have been married for 15 years, but their relationship with Partners for Sacred Places predates their marriage. While obtaining a master ' s degree in historic preservation at the University of Pennsylvania, Andrea oversaw Partners’ Information Clearinghouse, gathering information about the care and support of sacred places and mailing it to congregations, pre-internet. Tobin was with an architecture and historic preservation firm in Portland, Maine, and learned about Partners from preservation projects undertaken by congregations. After grad school Andrea moved to Maine and met Tobin while planning a preservation conference.
Since that time, they’ ve moved to greater Washington, DC, and have had varied and successful careers. Tobin recently retired from the State Department where he oversaw the department’ s historic properties overseas, and Andrea is leading The Fund to Conserve US Diplomatic Treasures Abroad. But their connection with historic religious buildings has been a constant.“ I love old buildings and their architecture,” says Andrea.“ Ultimately I want people to know they have something around them that’ s worth saving.” The couple worships at Old Presbyterian Meetinghouse in Alexandria, in part because of its history. Both agree,“ Sacred sites are often the most beautiful structures in any community, rural or urban.”
Andrea’ s parents were the first donors to Partners in their family, and Andrea and Tobin soon followed.“ Ecclesiastical architecture tells a story not only about the religion but the community that it’ s in,” they note.“ In a lot of ways sacred places are at the heart of communities, whether people realize it or not. We see Partners as being about community. It’ s a great organization.”
