Inside Cover : This neon sign outside Vernon A . M . E . Church is a landmark on Greenwood Avenue in Tulsa , OK , site of the 1921 Race Massacre . Vernon ’ s basement , which served as a refuge during that event , is the only structure in the area that survived ( the upper floors burned ). The congregation is also the only original black landowner on what was formerly known as Black Wall Street . With support from the National Fund for Sacred Places , this active congregation is completing repairs to its roof so the building can continue to serve as a refuge , center of community , and a physical connection to a tragic moment in America ’ s history .
