Grounds that Shout !

( and others merely shaking )

Curated by award-winning choreographer Reggie Wilson , Grounds that Shout ! ( and others merely shaking ) was a series of performances in May 2019 that responded to the layered histories of Philadelphia ’ s religious spaces through contemporary dance . Over two weeks , eight choreographers and performance groups performed original and resituated works of dance for 600 audience members , in and between four of Philadelphia ’ s most historic sacred places .
Grounds that Shout ! ( and others merely shaking ) has been supported by The Pew Center for Arts & Heritage .
“ This is an experiment of multiple choreographers being in relationship to site history and people . It is intended to be a tool for further investigations , conversations , and research — initially for the choreographers but expanding to their collaborators , the congregations , and on some far end the viewers of the performed work . Juxtaposition , difference , and the end results of multiplicities of research methodologies has been my desired end ; I do believe it ’ s what you will witness over this series of performances .
