Wilma “Ellen” Skouby was born Oct. 1,
1931, in Walnut Grove to Roy and Elma
Lemmon. Together, Roy and Elma worked
on their family farm and raised Ellen and her
three siblings, Marjorie, Mary, and Vernon.
Ellen grew up in Walnut Grove and loved
cats, her mother didn’t allow animals in the
house, but when she saw Ellen asleep with
one of the kittens, Elma allowed that one cat
to stay inside. Ellen’s parents were devout
Christians and raised her in faith, she started
going to church when she was weeks old.
Ellen attended Walnut Grove where she
met her high school sweetheart, Jim Schuler.
The couple were married the summer after
they graduated. After a few years, Ellen and
Jim realized they were too young for marriage, so they divorced and Ellen
moved to Springfield to work as a waitress at the Sycamore Inn. While working
there she met Laverne Skouby. Laverne and his bowling friends would
come into the Sycamore Inn and sit in Ellen’s section. Laverne asked Ellen
out for six months before she finally agreed to go on a date with him.
Laverne and Ellen were married three months later on Jan. 20, 1967, in
Springfield. Ellen has one son, Kenny, and three step-children, Brett, Karla,
and Paula, as well as five grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Ellen worked as a pharmacy technician for 24 years. She also has a
passion for flowers and gardening, and even grew roses for Jackson &
Perkins. Ellen loves to read and crochet, and sewed a lot early in life.
Ellen came to Parkview in June 2020, and when asked her favorite part
about living here, she said “I am so well taken care of, and the people I’ve
met here have been so kind.”
Congratulations, Ellen, on being chosen as Parkview Health Care
Facility’s Resident of the Month!
