M e e t V e l m a S t a r r , R e s i d e n t o f t h e M o n t h Velma Starr was born March 26, 1930, in Ozark, Missouri to Loran and Ethel Carney. Loran worked as a carpenter, while Ethel worked as a cook and took care of Velma and her four younger siblings. Velma grew up in Ozark until she was 10, and her family moved to Springfield. She attended Reed High School, but dropped out to take care of her siblings when her mother fell ill. When Velma was 19, her great aunt set her up on a blind date with Wendell Starr. He took her to the Ringling Brothers Circus, and they fell in love. Wendell and Velma were married Aug. 6, 1949, in Ozark. The couple soon moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where Wendell worked at a landscaping company. Velma stayed home to raise their five sons: William, David, Mark, Kirk, and Sam. The Starrs moved to Oklahoma where Wendell worked as a salesman and later owned an exterminator company. Once Velma’s sons left home, she went to work in sales. Velma and Wendell have 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-greatgrandchildren. Velma and Wendell moved to Bolivar, Missouri in 2005 and Wendell passed away in 2006. Over the years, Velma has enjoyed many hobbies, including oil painting, quilting, and gardening. Her garden has green beans, okra, tomatoes, and an array of flowers. Velma came to Parkview in May 2020, and when asked her favorite part about living here she said, “Everyone is friendly and willing to help, and I love the care I have gotten from the nursing staff.” Congratulations, Velma, on being chosen as Parkview Health Care Facility’s Resident of the Month!
