Meet Jerry McCarty, Resident of the Month
Jerry McCarty was born on Aug. 12, 1932, in Fair Play Mo., to
parents Frank and Edith Harville. She was the third youngest
child in a family of 11 children including four boys and seven
girls. Jerry’s father was a farmer and she enjoyed growing up on
a farm with her siblings. On the farm, they had cattle, sheep,
horses, and hogs. Her father was also a handy man and anytime
anyone in the area needed help he was the one to call.
Jerry shared that while growing up she really enjoyed living
and working on the farm. She and her siblings would do their
chores together and they always helped each other out. They
also enjoyed making their own games. Her favorite was when
her dad made a ball out of leather and twine and cut a board
down for them to use as a bat and they would play baseball to-
gether. “We were poor, but my dad always taught us to work
hard and be honest,” says Jerry.
Jerry met Ray D McCarty in Fair Play. He was from Bolivar, but there was a group of Boli-
var boys who would come to Fair Play activities “looking for girls to pick up.” The couple
married in December 1952 in the home of their pastor. Jerry was 18 and Ray was 23
when they married.
Ray was a farmer raising hogs, sheep and turkeys. Jerry shared that Ray preferred
raising turkeys and they had 4,000 - 5,000 turkeys on their farm. She remembers driv-
ing the tractor to feed them all. Jerry worked outside the home also at the Whole Sale
Company in Bolivar for 18 years. She then went to work at SBU as the administrative
assistant to the Provost. She worked for SBU for 25 years. She shared that this job was
very special to her. She enjoyed meeting with the students, helping them select course
schedules, and encouraging them while they completed their education.
Jerry has one son, Morgan. He and his wife, Julie, live in Bolivar with their daughter,
Addie. Church has always been an important part of her life and she has been a mem-
ber of Mt. Olive Baptist Church for more than 60 years. Throughout the years, Jerry has
enjoyed reading and working word puzzles. She even read 50 books the year she re-
tired! Before coming to Parkview, Jerry loved to watch wildlife out of her living room pic-
ture window.
When asked what she likes most about Parkview, Jerry shared that she can’t say
enough. “The people are good and so is the food,” says Jerry. She wants to encourage
anyone to visit Parkview first if you need a place to stay.

the month!
