Meet Lavonne Smith, Resident of the Month
Lavonne Smith was born on Oct. 7, 1937,
to Floyd and Velma Thomas, in California.
Floyd was a carpenter then a farmer, while
Velma stayed home to raise Lavonne and
her siblings. Lavonne lived in California until
she was nine years old when her and her
family drove Route 66 to Huron, Missouri.
Growing up she had chores on the farm that
included helping her mom and milking the
cows. She attended a one room school-
house that was grades 1st through 8th, and
after that, attended Bolivar High School.
During high school, Lavonne had a lot of
friends, started dating her future husband,
Gail Smith, and was voted Miss. Merry
Christmas as a sophomore.
After school, Gail went into the Air Force
and married Lavonne on Aug. 19, 1957, in
Las Vegas, Nevada. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Sherill; Dennis;
Sheila; and Darren. She also has ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Gail
worked for Southwest Electric in Bolivar for over 20 years while Lavonne worked at
home, in a pants factory, and provided childcare.
Growing up, Lavonne was involved in Christian Ambassadors with Gail. Through her
life, Lavonne spent her time crocheting, sewing, and spending time with family. She
enjoyed vacationing to the mountains and the beach and spending time outdoors. She
spent most of her time raising her children and watching her children and grandchil-
dren play sports and participate in school activities. Currently her favorite activities in-
clude people watching, bird watching, spending time with family, and being around chil-
dren.
Lavonne came to Parkview in June 2018. When asked her favorite part of living
here, she said “It is the friendly and caring staff.”
Congratulations, Lavonne, on being chosen as the Parkview Health Care Facility’s
Resident of the Month!
