Betty had four siblings, including two brothers and sisters. Shortly after she was born the family moved onto a farm in Bethany, Ill. The farm housed many animals including: cows, pigs, chickens, and horses. The family also grew corn and had several large gardens. Betty re- members spending a lot of time working on their family farm. One of her chores was to feed the chickens. Betty graduated from Bethany High Betty met her husband, Jesse, at the movie theater and described it as, “love at first sight.” He was 8 years older than her and began courting her after their first meeting. The couple married in 1946 at their preacher’s home. Jesse drove a truck before moving the family to Los Angeles, Calif. to work as a carpenter. The couple lived in California for 22 years before retir- ing to Missouri. Betty shared that they drove the area and found Bolivar to have the friendliest people and so they decided Bolivar was where they would live. Betty has two sons, three granddaughters, two great grandsons, one great -great granddaughter and one great-great grandson. Betty enjoys visiting with her family as often as possible. Throughout her years Betty has enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and reading. She also enjoyed tending to several large gardens.
