At last, it’s time for me to harvest the bounty from my garden, and if I seem a bit smug to you, I humbly beg your pardon. The veggies I planted in the spring, I have so carefully tended, and thanks to hungry rab- bits, my fences I’ve often mended. My garden’s the talk of the neighbors; they call me Farmer Dell. They ask for my big secret, but I say it’s the little things that tell. Using string and scissors to stake plants correctly is a skill that I can teach, along with having a garden spade and hose nozzle always within reach. Soon a green pepper, red pepper, a sprig of sage, and 4 zucchinis join 3 radishes that then escape my basket as if they were little Houdinis. Then with 4 green onions, 5 tomatoes, a sprig of rosemary, plus a head of Boston lettuce, I have all that I can carry. Ma’s in the kitchen with a cutting board and 2 knives sharp as can be to slice tomatoes and fry bacon in the skillet for BLTs. Three loaf pans, a grater, and salt shaker are ready and waiting for her to make the zucchini bread I’ve been anticipating.
