Veggie Garden Detective
Search for the items in bold.
At last, it’s time for me to harvest the bounty from my
garden, and if I seem a bit smug to you, I humbly beg
your pardon. The veggies I planted in the spring, I
have so carefully tended, and thanks to hungry rab-
bits, my fences I’ve often mended. My garden’s the
talk of the neighbors; they call me Farmer Dell. They
ask for my big secret, but I say it’s the little things
that tell. Using string and scissors to stake plants
correctly is a skill that I can teach, along with having a
garden spade and hose nozzle always within reach.
Soon a green pepper, red pepper, a sprig of sage, and
4 zucchinis join 3 radishes that then escape my
basket as if they were little Houdinis. Then with 4
green onions, 5 tomatoes, a sprig of rosemary, plus a
head of Boston lettuce, I have all that I can carry.
Ma’s in the kitchen with a cutting board and 2 knives
sharp as can be to slice tomatoes and fry bacon in
the skillet for BLTs. Three loaf pans, a grater, and salt
shaker are ready and waiting for her to make the
zucchini bread I’ve been anticipating.
