T. Thurman Hutchins Park (77.8 ac.)
Managed by: Operations Division
Thurman Hutchins is a park which provides a nice walking path, playground and two ball
fields. It has a 1.6 acre pond and 33.4 acres of tree canopy. The park’s position between
Caperton Swamp to the east and Twin Park to the west could provide a woodland path between
those two more natural habitats.
The woodlands on the west side of Thurman Hutchins, around 6.5 acres, have very dense
infestations of Bush Honeysuckle, Wintercreeper and other woody invasive plant species. This
area should be incorporated into future invasive removal work which is planned for Twin Park.
The pond has some really nice wetland plants and a nice observation deck. Undoubtedly,
it provides many birds and aquatic creatures a good habitat.
i. Desired future condition
The more active recreation nature of the park would limit future expansion of natural
habitats, but the woodland habitats should be managed for invasive plant control and diversity.
ii. Goals
1. Carry out woodland restoration work on east, south, and east woodland sections.
iii. Standards
Follow established practices for woodland restoration work and install a more diverse
understory of native trees and shrubs.
iv. Concerns
The park is surrounded by heavy infestations of invasive plants. The KYTC corridor of
I-71 runs along the south boundary of the park and has very dense infestations. Annual
monitoring and follow-up treatments to keep out invasive plants will be necessary.
