III. CONTEXT AND COMMUNITY INVENTORY A. Regional Setting Louisville is located in the Ohio Valley along the south bank of the Ohio River. In 2003, the City of Louisville merged with Jefferson County Government, forming a new entity known as Louisville/Jefferson County Metro Government (Louisville). Louisville occupies 375 square miles of land area. In addition to Louisville Metro Government, 83 small incorporated municipalities are located within Louisville Metro government boundaries. In 2010, Louisvilleā€™s population was 741,096 and the Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) population was 1, 283,566. The MSA consisted of 13 counties in both Kentucky and Indiana in 2010.
