. Project Origin and Planning Process
The purpose of this Parks and Recreation System Master Plan Update is to reexamine the overall vision and goals that were identified during the last planning effort which culminated in the 1995 Parks and Open Space Master Plan , and to assess progress including successes and deficiencies as well as new trends and community issues that inform the direction of park , recreation and open space planning and implementation . The 1995 Plan also identified potential implementation strategies for a comprehensive parks , recreation and open space system to serve the needs of current and future residents of Louisville and Jefferson County ( the 1995 plan was developed before merger of the City and County ).
This update reviews those strategies
Planning at Iroquois Park and reports on the status of the 1995 plan ’ s recommendations for meeting the community ’ s parks , recreation and open space goals for the next 20 years . The 1995 Parks and Open Space Master Plan was an integral part of a wider comprehensive planning effort , “ Cornerstone 2020 ,” which envisioned Louisville and Jefferson County as a livable , vibrant , and economically diverse community in the year 2020 . The plan noted that , “ A unified system of parks , recreation facilities , and open space which builds upon existing resources is a key to ensuring the future livability of the community .” The 1995 Plan ’ s Goals and Objectives were formally adopted by the Louisville / Jefferson County Planning Commission , the Louisville Board of Aldermen , the Jefferson County Fiscal Court and all the third and fourth class cities in Jefferson County . This Update will provide the basis for the parks , recreation and open space assessment that will be completed as part of Louisville ’ s next Comprehensive Plan which is underway as of early 2016 .
