Dr. Joel Kleven, D.C. Kleven Chiropractic and Spinal Decompression Favorite Wisecracking Sage Back in the day, everyone’s grandpa had a chiropractor who would “pop” and “crack” and make the family patriarch feel better while improving his mobility. Dr. Kleven is quick to point out that this “popping” is actually a specific spinal adjust- ment for the purpose of increasing joint mobility and relieving associ- ated nerve pressure. Like so many facets of the health- care industry, chiropractic care has come a long, long way in recent years and Dr. Joel Kleven is on the cutting edge of the trend. While a great many seniors rely on Dr. Kleven, so do lots of younger people, very young athletes, young professionals — especially those with high-stress careers, equestrians and even infants. “Today, it is all about wellness,” Dr. Kleven said. “There are so many chiropractors out there, but we all have our own little niche. We’re all about taking care of the entire family.” Innovative Solutions For Modern Ills 58 One important focus of Dr. Kleven’s practice is combatting degenerative, bulging, and herniated spinal discs in people of all ages. “It’s something we have done since the 1990’s,” Kleven said, adding that the science is getting better and better. “Spinal decompres- sion therapy is very effective for bulg- ing, ruptured, and herniated discs.” That’s great news as not all chiro- practors choose to incorporate Spinal Decompression protocols into their practice. It is a unique niche, and Dr. Kleven is a Certified Decompression Therapy Practitioner, holding two advanced certifications in Spinal Decompression, utilizing the latest in Neural-Flex Technology, a non-surgi- cal, non-opiate procedure and proto- col that effectively treats disabling low back and neck pain, sciatica, and radiating arm pain. Decompression Therapy effec- tively relieves the pain associated with disc herniation, bulging discs, ruptured discs, degenerative discs, and other spinal-related syndromes by reducing the pressure on spinal discs and facet joints through unload- ing created by distraction and posi- tioning. Decompression Therapy also effectively enhances the healing process and often renders quick, effective and amazing pain relief that enables most patients to return to a more active lifestyle. Research to develop this proce- dure was conducted by prominent physicians, engineers, and techni- cians at major teaching hospitals. Decompression Therapy is a form of computer-controlled, intermittent traction that usually begins with a series of sessions typically 3-4 times per week. Each session lasts approxi- mately 12 minutes. Addressing Circulation Issues Another form of treatment offered by Dr. Kleven, one that’s especially helpful to a variety of people, is BEMER Physical Vascular Therapy. “Bio electromagnetic energy regu- lation,” Dr. Kleven explains, “utilizes a low frequency magnetic field to increase the natural pumping mecha- nism of a blood vessel called vaso- motion, thus increasing blood flow in the microscopic vascular beds. Increasing blood flow at this level brings more oxygen to the tissue and more effectively removes waste prod- ucts from the tissue.” The therapy is especially benefi- cial for patients struggling with diabetic peripheral neuropathy. “We also use this to help people who have pain or swelling in the ankles or calves due to blood pres- sure issues,” he said, adding, “It can also be utilized for psoriasis and many other skin conditions and we have been seeing great results.” Paying It Forward Dr. Kleven is community-minded and gives back to the community in a number of ways. “We have recently started work- Photo by Megan Parks ing with the women from Sanctified Hope,” Dr. Kleven enthusiastically explained. “Sanctified Hope Home for Women is a transitional living environment for women who have recently been released from prison. Many of them suffer from various types of spine pain and headaches. I have teamed up with fellow chiro- practor, Dr. Trev Dixon, D.C. to provide complimentary chiropractic care to their residents while they are transitioning.” Kleven Chiropractic, LLC was also recently nominated for Small Business of the Year through the East Parker County Chamber of Commerce. “You can’t get much smaller,” Kleven said jokingly. “It is an honor to be nominated, and I look forward to the upcoming banquet.” Also located within the offices of Kleven Chiropractic are Stellar Face and Body by Mary Myers and Alyssa Bell’s AbsoluteFit. “Stellar Face and Body provides pressure point therapy and reflexol- ogy that complements our chiroprac- tic care”, said Kleven. Mary Myers, a Certified Intra-Dermal Technician, also provides a full array of Med-Spa Continued on page 80
