— Howell’s Western Café

hile traveling West of
Springtown I came across
Howell’s Western Café, housed in a
brown brick building with awnings
and these great replicas of vintage
signs. The place was so inviting and
intriguing that I decided to stop and
check it out.
I soon realized that those were
not replica vintage signs but, original
signs as the restaurant first opened in
this location in May of 1962.
As I entered and selected a seat
from the many tables, booths and
a counter, I felt as if I had not been
let in on a secret, this place was full
of customers. The décor is eclectic
with wooden wainscoting topped
with silver metal tiles that covered
the ceilings as well as ceiling fans.
Decorations were definitely showing their age but, instead of being
off-putting, it actually lent a certain
charm to the place.
I seated myself in a booth,
ordered a sweet iced tea and looked
102
over the menu. The front of the menu
has a wonderful cartoon of a chuck
wagon cook. Inside the choices were
categorized by western theme “Matt
Dillon sandwiches, Cole Younger
burgers, Calamity Jane’s chicken,
Wyatt Earp’s steaks, Nemo’s seafood,
etc., — and it all looked good.
I chose instead to order from the
board displaying the daily lunch
specials: Beer-Battered Cod, Chicken
Fried Steak, Roast Beef, Fried Chicken
or a Pan Fried Steak served with your
choice of two or three vegetables.
I chose Beer-Battered Cod with
Mac ‘n Cheese, Ranch Style Beans
and a soft roll.
As for service, my tea glass was
refilled constantly as I waited for my
lunch to be prepared and I looked at
the restaurant. I saw an energetic staff
taking very good care of their guests,
regulars and first timers, alike.
My food arrived piping hot and in
a timely manner. I first noticed that
the Southern-Style Mac ‘n Cheese
was made with large noodles and
plenty of cheesy spices that you
could taste. Ranch-Style Beans
were so good that I could barely
resist mopping up the juice with my
roll. The Beer-Battered Cod was
good and the Tartar Sauce was excellent.
At the end of my lunch I was presented with the dessert portion of my
lunch— yummy Banana Pudding,
which was thoroughly enjoyable.
My entire meal, with a generous
tip was about $11.00. I definitely will
be back.
