our pastimes: ADVENTURES IN GLAMPING
Glamp Across Texas …
State Park —
And Beyond Meridian
Nothing Middle of the Road About It
By MARK BROWN
O
ur latest adventure involved a great camping trip to
Meridian State Park.
Such a terrific and beautiful place.
Meridian State Park is near the City of Meridian in Bosque
County and is a 505.4-acre park. A rock and earthen
dam was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corp
(CCC) on Bee Creek to form the park’s 72-acre lake. The
land was acquired from private owners in 1933 – 1935.
The park was opened to the public in 1935.
Tonkawa Indians once lived in the area before the
arrival of white settlers. They also occupied the area prior
to 1841. The Texas-Santa Fe expedition of 1841 passed
through Bosque County near the present site of the park in
Bosque Valley.
Great, pull-through camper sites, the top group has full
hookups, and the scenery is fantastic. We hiked, took a lot
of photos, cooked, and had great campfires.
We cooked campfire breakfasts every morning and
Saturday night was chicken fried steak night, with Dutch
Oven Biscuits, mashed potatoes and gravy, then home-
made fried pies. All of this was cooked on our campfires!
Texas does a great job with its State Parks. I highly
recommend this park.
