because they did a good job, you
liked them. It’s the same way with

Don’s personal life —
yes he has one
Don has never been one to spend
a lot of evenings out with the boys.
Why?
“The first time that I remember
seeing her I was living in Fort Worth
with my cousin,” Don said. “It was
probably in ’74. I was on my way to
my daddy’s house, and I came down
the stairs and she was sitting on my
couch with some friends. So I’m sure,
I said something stupid and then left.”
“Her” name was Glenda. Months
later a mutual friend invited Don to
a Christmas party she was giving.
She also mentioned that Glenda was
going to be there.
“I went,” Don said, “and she was
there. We visited and talked and
I took her home. We had a date
the following Sunday. We went to
Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen
Rose. After a couple of weeks of that
we’ve been together ever since. We
got married in 1976. She still likes
me.”
Don is a self-described
homebody. He’ll be the first to tell
you that he’d rather be home with
Glenda than to be just about any
place else on earth, and it’s been that
way for the entire 40 years.
One word everyone I interviewed
for this article used to describe Don
is, “loyal.” That may be a big reason
why he and Glenda are inseparable
after all those years.
They have two sons, Delaney
who lives in Portland, Oregon, and
works as a photographer, and Colby,
a school teacher at an all-girls school
in Fort Worth.
“They are middle name kids; I
named Denis Colby after Dennis
Wilson, my wife says that Colby is
named after her daddy, but I tell him
it’s after Dennis Wilson,” Don said.
“Delaney was named after Delaney
Bramlett, (as in Delaney and Bonnie
and Friends) who was a singer in the
60’s.”
Music fuels the course
Dave Cowley and Don have been
friends for a long time.
“I’ve known Don since 1987,”
Cowley said. “I was (a radio
personality) at 95.9 based in Mineral
Wells and we did the first remote
together in 1987. Don loves music
and knows a lot about rock. He
probably has the best knowledge of
rock music of anyone in the county,
second only to Bob Kingsley. I was
impressed.”
From that common ground grew
a long-standing friendship between
Dave and Don.
“I’m one of the few people who
have seen Don Allen after dark,”
Cowley said. “One word that comes
to mind when I think of Don Allen is
the word, ‘real.’ He’s so real and so
honest. You always know where you
stand with Don.”
Don Allen is a cheerful giver, but
insists that most of it stays under the
radar, according to Cowley.
“He never forgets acts of
kindness,” Cowley said. “Every
summer he and I do these live
remotes, a box fan drive for the
Senior Center. He always talks about
the acts of kindness of other people,
never his own.”
Don Allen enjoys rock concerts,
is very quiet and he likes to observe
people. “Don appreciates talent and
he loves the Beach Boys.”
But, Cowley adds that if you
don’t want to know the truth about
something, then don’t ask Don.
“I had a chance to interview the
Beach Boys, and I brought along
the booklet that came with their big
CD box set, and I got Mike Love to
autograph it for Don,” Cowley recalls.
“When I gave it to him, he thanked
me, then he said, ‘You know, I’m
really not a big Mike Love fan.’ Don
is always so real, and you never have
to guess what he’s thinking.”
When we asked Cowley what he
views as the most important lesson
he’s learned from having a long,
close friendship with Don Allen,
he said, “Never put on airs and
always be yourself. Be as real as you
possibly can be.”
