East Elementary students get visit from local firefighters The kindergarten team at East Elementary School knows that students learn best when they are deeply engaged. Bringing in real world examples helps students connect what they are learning to their lives. So when the kindergartners began their unit about communities, Rebecca Reiher, one of the kindergarten teachers, decided to call the fire department and invite some community helpers in to talk with the students about how they meet the needs of people in this community. Firefighters from Monroe Fire Station Number 2 came to visit Sept. 6, 2013. “Their talk began in the school auditorium where students learned how firefighters keep everyone safe and were able to see many of the tools they use to do their job,” said kindergarten teacher Lauren Efird. “They watched as a firefighter put on all of his gear and explained what each piece was for.” Firefighters also shared fire safety tips with the students, including how and why to call 911, what to do if you see a fire, and how to have a fire drill at home. Then the kindergarteners went to see a fire truck out in the parking lot. Students were able to hear a call from dispatch through the radio as they viewed the fire engine. “The fire engine was awesome,” said kindergartener, Armando Renteria. “I was pretending to be a fireman.” Students were even able to walk through a ladder truck to “walk in the shoes” of a firefighter. Efird said she was grateful to the firefighters for spending time with her class. “Thank you to the Monroe Fire Department for visiting,” she said. “Our students learned all about how you help the community and what tools you need to accomplish the job.” Written by: Lauren Efird, Kindergarten Teacher Lauren Efird’s kindergarten students pose in front of the fire truck when firefighters come to visit. A recent MTA study concluded that medication and counseling were not effective in changing the symptoms of ADD/ADHD in an eight year follow up study. EEG biofeedback has consistently demonstrated significant and powerful changes in clinical groups and is currently recommended by six professional organizations for ADD/ADHD and other clinical conditions. DO YOU WANT THESE RESULTS FOR YOUR CHILD? I am currently conducting neuroscience research into children’s quantitative EEG response to cognitive challenges. I am looking for approximately five- and eight-year-old children to be research subjects. The reimbursement is $25 for about 60-90 minutes of your time.
