Cuthbertson High teacher wins Hometown Hero Award Alissa Hammersmith of Cuthbertson High is the Union County Public Schools Hometown Hero for March. Principal Dr. Kim Schroeder, school administrators and Mr. Hammersmith surprised the science teacher with the award March 16. Chris Blettenberg of Charles G. Monnett & Associates presented Hammersmith with a $250 gift card for school supplies and a coupon for a pizza party. Mrs. Hammersmith wins Hometown Hero Award “It is great to know that the students and community support education and the work I do in the classroom,” Hammersmith said. “I work really hard for my students and I am glad they realize I put in a lot of effort to make sure they are successful.” Hammersmith is a veteran teacher with 12 years of experience. She is the science chair at Cuthbertson High, where she has been teaching for five years. Hammersmith’s teaching career began in Pennsylvania and she has also taught in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school system and at local community colleges. “Mrs. Hammersmith has taught us more than just AP Biology,” said senior Rachel Barber. “She has taught us life lessons that will definitely be useful later in life.” Science teacher Alissa Hammersmith of Cuthbertson High was When asked what makes her day, Hammersmith said, “I love when chosen as the March Hometown Hero. students come back to visit after they have graduated or send notes to tell me how my class prepared them for college or how they are using what they learned in my class.” Each month the Charles G. Monnett & Associates law firm honors teachers in Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Cabarrus and Union counties for their service in public education. The nominations for the Hometown Hero Teacher Appreciation Award are ongoing throughout the school year. Winners are chosen based on the number of votes through an online voting contest held on the law firm’s website.
