Shelia Horne could not hold back the tears when she was named the April Hometown Hero for Union County Public Schools on Friday, April 17. During a surprise visit, the Central Academy of Technology and Arts math teacher was awarded a certificate and a check for classroom supplies from Charles G. Monett III and Associates. “This is such an honor and I cannot find words to describe this moment,” Horne said. After the presentation, Horne asked, “How did I win?” She later learned that her students nominated her for the award and they encouraged their peers and parents to vote. “I would like to say thank you to the two ladies who nominated me and to all of those who voted,” said Horne. “PreCalculus is not easy and I want my students to think above and beyond. To know that they appreciate me is an awesome feeling.” Horne has been an educator for 23 years. She taught at Forest Hills High for 13 years and Porter Ridge High for nine years. This is her first year at CATA. “I think she is a really good teacher,” said 11th grader Kerrigan Laney. “She is always willing to help everyone. She pushes us and makes sure we understand our work.” Each month the law firm honors teachers in Mecklenburg, Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Cabarrus and Union counties for their service in public education. Each winning teacher receives a $250 Visa gift card for classroom supplies and a Domino’s pizza party for his/her class. --This article was written by Tahira Stalberte and provided courtesy of the Communications Office of the Union County Public Schools.
