Problem-solving , communication skills , independence , decisionmaking and socialization are just a few of the areas that kindergarten can strengthen in young students .
“ Kindergarten and preschool programs begin the process of opening up the mind to new and wonderful learning ,” said Sardis Elementary principal Theresa Benson . “ It ’ s the perfect age to ignite that joy of reading and begins setting the stage for the journey of being life-long learners . Experiencing the classroom at an early age is a great investment for our kids and for their future . I believe early childhood experiences and interventions are key to successful elementary and secondary achievements .”
As kindergarten registration drew near , parents across the county are preparing their young children for this exciting first step into their educational future .
All students who will turn 5 years of age by August 31 are eligible to enroll in kindergarten at the elementary school located in their attendance area .
Dr . Cindy Croffut , Director of UCPS Elementary Education , says there are things parents can do to help prepare their child for kindergarten :
1 ) Language skills are an important part of literacy . “ Take time to have conversations with your child every day ,” Croffut said . “ This will build vocabulary and background knowledge that will set the stage for learning . It ’ s important to know that learning can occur anywhere .”
2 ) Teachable moments . “ Take advantage of learning opportunities in your daily surroundings . For example , when driving in your car , point out signs that children are familiar with such as Wal-Mart , McDonald ’ s and Target ,” Croffut said . “ This will help students begin to recognize letters and sounds .”
3 ) Math counts . “ At the grocery store , have your child count the number of items you put in the cart . Practice adding and subtracting by using everyday objects , drawings or even the fingers .”
4 ) Read , read , read . “ Take time to read to your child every day . Not only will this help build vocabulary and background knowledge , but it will also create a readiness for learning to read .”
