All County Band
Middle school and high school band students from across Rowan County converged upon Carson High School on Friday , February 24 , 2017 . Students were chosen via an audition process from all RSS middle & high schools , where they had to prove technical skill and musicality on their individual instrument , and come together for a day and half of rehearsals . After just hours of rehearsing for the first time together , they assembled into the Carson HS auditorium to present the results of their work .
NORTH ROWAN MIDDLE STUDENT ATTENDS PRESIDENTIAL INAUGURATION LEADERSHIP SUMMIT
NRMS student Christarian Patterson attended a 5-day Presidential Inauguration Leadership Summit – an honor given to outstanding students from across the United States . This was made possible through Envision and provides students with a deeper understanding of history behind the electoral process . Listed below are highlights from Christarian ’ s experience :
The purpose of the All- County Clinic is to provide an honors-level performance ensemble for students of Rowan County , combining players from all schools , and to provide the highest level of teaching and performing in a condensed setting . Clinicians Sandy Boone ( middle school ) and Bob Buckner ( high school ) demanded the highest of standards from these musicians , and they truly stepped up to challenge . Students had to learn new music in an extremely short amount of time , then immediately give a concert with almost no break between the last rehearsal and the start of the concert . To put this timeline into perspective , most music concerts are rehearsed and prepared over an 8 to 9-week period . Students at the All-County Clinic accomplished this feat in less than two days !
• Attended the 58 th Presidential Inauguration and witnessed the exchange of presidential power
• Attended events at the Eagle Bank Arena featuring : Spike Lee , Abby Wambach , Malala and Ziauddin Yousafzai , Governor Martin O ’ Malley and Carly Fiorina
• Heard former Secretary of State Colin Powell speak about how society , others and self expectation should not stop you from doing certain things
In 1967 at the Tanglewood Symposium , which helped to define the role of music education in public schools , they made a declaration : “ Music serves best when its integrity as an art is maintained .” No gimmicks . No special computer , laser , 3-D printer , or phone app . Just pure , enjoyable music which students put their hearts into when they perform can transcend all barriers that we face in society . This is evident when you see a child at the end of their music concert : a face of complete joy and elation . A sense of accomplishment that they know very few of their peers would dare try to accomplish . This is reason why we put so much work into such a short amount of time . This is why we love music .
• Experienced a face-to-face interaction with Colin Powell and a had picture taken with him
• Visited the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum .
Christarian was honored and recognized at a recent Board of Education meeting during celebrations .

Literacy Summit – Huge Success !
The North Rowan Middle 7th graders in Angie Fleming ’ s class rocked the 3rd Literacy Summit with over 100 community leaders attending as they performed their PBL on the importance of community support for literacy .

Attendees were welcomed by Dr . Lynn Moody , Superintendent for the Rowan-Salisbury Schools , with an overview . After the student presentation , Dr . Julie Morrow , Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction , guided attendees to work in small collaborative groups – lead by NRMS student leaders – to determine the direction for the new strategic plan .

The Literacy Summit was organized by the Literacy Committee under the direction of Dr . Morrow .
The summit was held in March at the Wallace Educational Forum .
