Nine ( 9 ) Rowan-Salisbury schools have been awarded participation in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program for this current school year . School Nutrition will offer a fresh produce snack three days a week at these schools . Libby Post is the School Nutrition Director .

Horizons Teacher Is Named Outstanding Practitioner
Congratulations to Horizons Unlimited Science Specialist Anne Ellis for being named the “ 2016 EENC ( Environmental Educators of NC ) Outstanding Practitioner ” – an award she received previously in 2014 . Ms . Ellis is recognized for her skill , leadership , and work as an environmental educator as well as an advocate for high quality education . The honor was presented at the EENC Conference in September .
Overton Elementary The Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education approved Superintendent Dr .
Lynn Moody ’ s recommendation to name the following new principal :
Candice Austin is the new principal at Overton Elementary School . Mrs . Austin has experience with the Rowan-Salisbury Schools previously serving as an assistant principal at Granite Quarry Elementary and a member of the district ’ s ‘ Grow Your Own Leaders ’ professional development program . She is currently an Instructional Facilitator with Troutman Elementary School . Mrs . Austin received her Bachelor ’ s Degree from UNC-Charlotte in Special Education and her Master ’ s Degree from Gardner Webb University in School Administration .
Mrs . Austin is very excited to be back with the Rowan-Salisbury Schools and looks forward to meeting the Overton Elementary family and the RSS .
China Grove Middle School China Grove Middle School held the 3rd Annual Terrie Hess House Toy Drive from November 18 through December , 16 , 2016 . The Terri Hess House ( www . preventchildabuserowan . org ) helps children who have been abused . We have been so fortunate to be able to take them lots of toys the last couple of years . These toys are used to give the children a little comfort when they are referred for services . They also help some of the families out with Christmas gifts .

Dr . James Shaver , from Woodmen Life Chapter in Landis , made a special presentation to the Board of Education of US . Flags to be used in classrooms and outdoors .

RSS Is One Of 13 Districts To Receive The BWF Stem Grant
Rowan-Salisbury Schools is one of the 13 recipients for the Student Science Enrichment Program grant through the Burroughs Wellcome Fund . This grant supports science education that take place outside of the traditional classroom . RSS will be receiving $ 60,000 a year for a 3-year renewable cycle . Horizons Unlimited Planetarium Director and Science Specialist Neil Pifer submitted the grant for the BRIDGE program ( Building Research Investigators Doing Growth Experiences ).
Cleveland Elementary
Technology Facilitator Lynn Brady received a $ 25,000 grant from Tom ’ s of Maine that will be used for ongoing projects , new ideas and to fill other needs at Cleveland Elementary .
