Service Above Self The Rowan-Salisbury School System is fortunate to have many children modeling leadership and making our community a better place to live right now! In December, students were celebrated, honored and recognized for their Service Above Self at the annual ceremony held at Catawba College’s Keppel Auditorium. Each child that received a nomination was announced, walked across the stage, received a framed certificate, congratulated by Superintendent Dr. Lynn Moody, and had a photo taken with Santa! Winners were also recognized in each grade level, as well a school in each grade level received awards for the most quality nominations. Students enjoy becoming actively involved in community projects and service, and enjoy helping others. They do service because this is what they do. They are leaders. Our students recorded over 23,000 hours of service during the 2014-2015 school year ~ that is extraordinary! Service Above Self is a program that recognizes our students for volunteering and demonstrating the differences of selfishness and selflessness, as they become role models for not only their peers, but for all of us. The Rowan County United Way in conjunction with the Rowan Rotary sponsors this program to recognize these inspiring students. Inclement Weather Policy As we begin this time of year and the uncertainty of weather conditions, we want to take this time to review our procedures for the possibility of missed days due to inclement weather. For the previous two years, an Inclement Weather Committee met during the month of November to plan ahead for possible scenarios of how missed instructional days may be made up due to inclement weather. This committee represents administrators from Finance, Transportation, Operations, Accountability & Assessment, Public Information, Maintenance and Dr. Moody. The committee looks at: n Required Instructional Hours n State Mandates n Parent & Community Values for Breaks & Holidays The status of any day in the school calendar may be changed at any time during the school year if days are missed due to inclement weather. All days, with the exception of Sundays and Veteran’s Day, between August 24 and June 8, no matter how they are designated on the school calendar MAY become make-up school days, if necessary. Since the weather is unpredictable, workdays, breaks, and early release days may become instructional days if days are missed due to inclement weather. Any Saturday, particularly in January-April, is subject to being changed to a school make-up day. Notice for make-up days may be short depending upon the timing and duration of inclement weather. General statutes and State Board of Education policy concerning the school calendar will be followed. The make-up schedule will be announced as soon as possible after an inclement weather event has ended. 4 • Jan/Feb 2016• Parent Teacher News  C E L E B R A T I N G 50 Y E A R S !
