Cavnar earns Award for Teaching Excellence
Once again, Bobbie Cavnar is being honored for his outstanding efforts in the
classroom.
Cavnar is among 38 educators from across the United States who will receive
the prestigious Award for Teaching Excellence sponsored by the California
Casualty insurance company. The award will be presented in February
2018 during the NEA Foundation’s Salute to Excellence in Education Gala in
Washington, D.C.
As one of the 38 award recipients, Cavnar is in the running to be named
the nation’s top educator and win a $25,000 prize. Five finalists will be
announced at the beginning of the school year and vie for the national honor.
Cavnar teaches English at South Point High School in Belmont. He was
named the Gaston County Teacher of the Year in May 2015, the Southwest
Region Teacher of the Year in December 2016, and the North Carolina
Teacher of the Year in April 2016.
As the 2016-2017 North Carolina Teacher of the Year, Cavnar spent the
past school year traveling the state and country, speaking to educators,
elected officials, community leaders, and other groups. He also served as
an adviser to the North Carolina State Board of Education and the State
Superintendent’s Advisory Council.
“We are extremely proud of Bobbie Cavnar and all that he has accomplished,”
stated Superintendent of Schools W. Jeffrey Booker. “He is a model teacher,
a leader in the profession, and an advocate for children, teachers, and public
education. We are so fortunate to have him as part of the Gaston County
Schools family.”
