Again this year , Gaston County Schools held its “ Nickels for Neighbors ” campaign .
Friday , November 4 , was “ Nickels 4 Neighbors ” Day in Gaston County Schools . All 54 schools in the district and the central office departments participated . Students , employees , parents , and others were asked to make contributions of any amount . The goal was to have each school collect $ 200 – the equivalent of 4,000 nickels .
All the money collected during our “ Nickels 4 Neighbors ” campaign was counted , and the grand total is $ 21,952.31 . That is the equivalent of 439,046 nickels .

The total far exceeds our goal to have each of our 54 schools raise $ 200 , which shows the true spirit of caring and giving in Gaston County Schools .
The money collected was donated to school districts in eastern North Carolina to help children and their families who are recovering from Hurricane Matthew .
Last years event collected money for the schools in Clarendon and Williamsburg counties . Clarendon and Williamsburg are rural counties located south of Florence with a population of approximately 35,000 people in each county .
With guidance from the South Carolina School Boards Association , Gaston County Schools chose to “ adopt ” the schools in Clarendon and Williamsburg counties . Many children and their families living in Clarendon and Williamsburg counties lost everything because of the flood .
Superintendent Booker honored
Superintendent of Schools W . Jeffrey Booker was one of eight regional superintendents of the year honored on Thursday , November 17 during the N . C . School Boards Association ’ s annual conference and awards ceremony in Greensboro . He and the other superintendents were officially recognized in front of hundreds of school district representatives from across the state . Booker is the Southwest Region Superintendent of the Year for 2016-2017 , representing the 11 school districts in the greater Charlotte area .
