Back to school : Digital synchronicity Keeping up with students ’ digital tools
Over the summer , Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools offered students an opportunity to participate in its Summer Learning Blitz , which allowed students to enrich math skills , expand reading levels and explore new places using free digital tools . These included Compass Learning , Dreambox , myON and Raz-Kids .
Each tool is used to support instruction in a myriad of ways throughout the school year . Below is a brief summary of each tool .
Compass Learning
Compass Learning provides engaging activities for students with gradeappropriate lesson plans for preschool to eighth grade including lessons , activities , quizzes , animations , audio and video instruction . While working through the activities , students enhance critical-thinking skills . It has an application that enables Measures of Academic Progress ( MAP ) assessments to communicate student-performance information directly to Compass Learning , which develops targeted , individualized learning paths to help students master critical content .
Dreambox
DreamBox supports students ’ conceptual understanding and fluency with mathematics . Students create characters and go on math adventures .
myON myON is a personalized literacy program that provides access to a collection of digital books with reading supports customized for individual students . myON develops an individual profile for each student based on his or her interests and reading ability , and generates a recommended book list . The program enables full access to digital books students can read , rate , review and share with classmates through safe social networking . Through embedded assessments , which include end of book quizzes and benchmark quizzes , myON allows educators , student and families to monitor , track and
measure student reading growth . It is designed for PreK-8 students and is also used in high schools with students reading below level .
Raz-Kids Raz-Kids delivers hundreds of interactive , eBooks spanning 27 levels of difficulty and covering a wide range of subjects . Teachers are able to monitor students ’ progress and change reading levels as needed . Levels are based on each child ’ s reading skills and adjusted for each student . The students can listen to a story , read a story out loud , record themselves reading and then take a comprehension quiz . Each child earns points or stars to use for a RAZ Rocket . With Raz-Kids , students have comprehensive 24 / 7 access to engaging reading .
