Literacy-focused event sprinkled with fun More than 1,100 attend CMS Literacy Festival
​For the second consecutive year , Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools held a day of literacyfocused fun for families from Title I schools to help them prepare for a successful new school year . More than 1,100 people attended the Aug . 13 Superstars Among Us Literacy Festival — an 18 percent increase in attendance over the first year .
The event was held from 10 a . m . to 3 p . m . at E . E . Waddell Language Academy . Families received book bags and school supplies . They participated in literacy-based games and workshops . Students also enjoyed bounce houses and face-painting , while parents and caretakers learned about CMS digital tools , magnet-school options , English language learner services and graduation requirements .
“ We find families learn the most when they are having fun together ,” said LaTarzja Henry , assistant superintendent for the district ’ s Community Partnerships and Family Engagement department . “ Providing resources and knowledge in a friendly way helps our families feel empowered and supported to make the most of their educational experience .”
Partners and volunteers played a key role in the festival ’ s success . More than 35 volunteers registered families , coordinated literacy games and read to students . Information and activities were provided by more than 30 partner organizations . The Novant Community Care Cruiser immunized students and the Cutting Room Salon provided haircuts . The Carolina Panthers mascot Sir Purr , members of the CMS Police Department and Superintendent Ann Clark also stopped by to join in the fun .

Smith University ’ s Metropolitan College , Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity , Inc ., Central Piedmont Community College , Department of Social Services Community Resources Division , EmpowHERment , Walden University , Parent Teacher Association and the YMCA . ​

Carla Stanback wins I am CMS Award Sourcing and onboard specialist honored by colleagues
​Carla Stanback is the latest winner of the district ’ s I am CMS Award . Superintendent Ann Clark presented Stanback with the award at Spaugh on Monday , July 11 . Stanback , a specialist with the sourcing and onboarding team , was nominated for her exceptional work in recruiting educators .
“ She is well-known for inspiring spirit and a strong willingness to help all candidates explore employment options with CMS ,” a colleague wrote on her nomination form .
Stanback received a $ 100 gift card from award sponsor Charles G . Monnett & Associates . She will also be professionally photographed for an I am CMS poster that will be displayed at her work site .
