Coln Named CCS Principal of the Year
Kecia Coln, Ph.D., principal of J.N. Fries
Magnet School, has been selected as the 2014
Wells Fargo Principal of the Year for Cabarrus
County Schools, in a program sponsored by the
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction
and Wells Fargo.
Coln will compete with other local award
recipients. After the state selection process is
completed, one principal will be selected as the
2014 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year.
Coln has served as principal of J.N. Fries
Magnet School since August 2006. Prior to that,
she served as assistant principal of instruction at
Northwest Cabarrus Middle School. She began her
career with Cabarrus County Schools in 1997 as
an eighth grade science teacher at Concord Middle
School.
Coln received her doctorate in curriculum
and instruction, her master’s degree in school
administration, and her bachelor’s degree
in middle grades instruction for science and
mathematics, all from the University of North
Carolina at Charlotte.
A recent highlight of Coln’s accomplishments
is the successful conversion of J.N. Fries middle
school to a district magnet school and the
implementation of two new magnet programs
— STEM (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics) and International Baccalaureate.
CCS principals vote amongst themselves
for principal of the year; finalists are selected
from that list and a selection panel comprised
of former CCS principals of the year, as well as
other district administrators interviews finalists
and selects a winner.
Last year’s CCS Principal of the Year Lynn
Rhymer was named Regional Principal of the
Year and later, the 2013 North Carolina High
School Principal of the Year.
Principals of the year receive a cash award.
The regional Wells Fargo Principals of the Year
receive a cash award for his or her school and
a cash award for personal use. The 2014 Wells
Fargo Principal of the Year will receive $3,000
for his or her school and $3,000 for his or her
personal use.
Regional award recipients will be selected by
February 2014 and the state-level winner will be
announced in the spring at a special luncheon in
Raleigh.
