Cabarrus County Schools Tidbits CMHS’s Wendell Moore Jr. Named McDonald’s All American King of the Court Cox Mill High’s Wendell Moore Jr. was named a McDonald’s High School All American! Wendell is the first player in the history of Cabarrus County basketball to achieve this honor. He will represent North Carolina during the most prestigious high school all- star basketball game in the nation as the only player from the state selected for the East roster. The 42nd McDonald’s All American Games will be held on March 27th in Atlanta and will be broadcast on ESPN. Congratulations, Wendell! CCS high school student leaders recently presented checks from the annual King of the Court volleyball fundraiser. The 2018 event raised nearly $16,000 bringing the effort’s donation total to more than $100,000! Funds are distributed locally to the Northeast Foundation and to the PinkPals Breast Cancer Support Group VEX Robotics Tournament a Success The VEX IQ State Qualifier Tournament was held on Saturday, January 12th, at Jay M. Robinson High School. The event spotlighted an exciting partnership between the Corning Foundation and the Cabarrus County Schools VEX Program as Corning Manufacturing Engineer Clay White presented a grant award to the CCS VEX program in the amount of $14,100! Several Cabarrus County Schools VEX teams were recognized in the Tournament: Harrisburg Elementary Queen Bees Team: The Judges Award Coltrane Webb STEM Elementary CougarNation Team: The Sportsmanship Award Northwest Cabarrus Middle Chase Robotics: The Teamwork Champion Award Harris Road Middle GP Team: The Think Award Congratulations to all! Air Force ROTC Exceeds Standards The Air Force Junior ROTC cadets and instructors of Jay M. Robinson High and Northwest Cabarrus High earned an overall unit assessment score of Exceeds Standards! This is the highest score attainable from a formal unit evaluation. The instructors provided outstanding leadership in administering the cadet centered citizenship program and the cadets performed exceptionally well and took great pride in leading and accomplishing their unit goals. The Air Force ROTC citizenship programs are making a positive impact on the cadets, the school, and the community. Well done! 6 March/April 2019 • Parent Teacher Magazine WHES Named National School of Distinction Weddington Hills Elementary, an IB World School, has been named a National Magnet School of Distinction by Magnet Schools of America! Magnet Schools of America is the national association for magnet and theme-based schools. To receive a national merit award, a school must submit a detailed application that is scored by a panel of educators. Schools are judged and scored on their demonstrated ability to raise student academic achievement, promote racial and socioeconomic diversity, provide integrated curricula and instruction, and create strong family and community partnerships that enhance the school’s magnet theme. Congratulations, Wildcats! Winecoff Elementary Receives New Bicycles Winecoff Elementary School students received new bicycles thanks to the generosity of several businesses, organizations and individuals. On Saturday, Dec. 22nd families picked up new bicycles in the school’s gymnasium. Thanks to Kids First of the Carolinas, Saint James Catholic Church, multiple United Methodist Churches, Hendrick Motorsport, Old Mill Storage Uhaul, private citizens and Winecoff staff for making nearly 150 kids’ wish for a new bike come true!
