Kate Culbreth Selected as Regional TOY Dey is District’s Top Speller Again For the second consecutive year, Aarja Dey is once again the top speller in Cabarrus County Schools. Now a sixth-grader at Harris Road Middle School, she defended her title at the district spelling bee on Jan. 9th. After 23 rounds, Aarja reclaimed the title by correctly spelling the championship word – superfluous. Kate Culbreth, our 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, has been selected as the 2019 Southwest Region Teacher of the Year! Kate was surprised by the announcement from Freebird McKinney, the 2018 North Carolina Teacher of the Year, during a school-wide assembly. Kate, among eight other regional winners, will now participate in the state selection process. The North Carolina Teacher of the Year will be named in April. Congratulations, Kate! Aarja Dey The runner-up for this year’s bee was Minah Koo, a fifth-grader at W.R. Odell Elementary School. The top spellers from CCS elementary and middle schools competed for the title. The superintendent uses information obtained from weather forecasts and district personnel about road conditions when determining whether school should be cancelled, delayed, or dismissed early due to severe weather. Please keep in mind that no announcement means school is operating on a normal schedule. However, when school must be dismissed early or is closed, parents should make arrangements for childcare, as the KIDS:PLUS after-school and before-school programs will not operate that day. Decisions about delaying or canceling school or dismissing school early as a result of inclement weather or even the threat of inclement weather are never easy. Additionally, the CCS Information Office will contact families and staff via the Blackboard Connect notification system with an appropriate message. Information also will be posted to Time Warner Cable Channel 21, CCS social media sites (Facebook and Twitter), and shared with local media outlets. As a general reminder, the CCS Information Line, 704-260-5649, is also updated with current information about any district-wide school closings or delays. In order to comply with state law, students are required to make up days missed when school is cancelled. The superintendent may elect to use a Saturday as a make-up day or one of the days designated on the academic calendar for the current school year.
