2018 - 2019 CCS Driver Education Information
Cabarrus County Schools will offer driver education classes for the
2018-19 school year to public, private, charter, and home school
students who are enrolled in a school within the Cabarrus County
School District.
Students must be 15 years of age on or before May 31, 2019, to be
eligible to register for these classes. Students who will be 15 years of
age after October 31, 2019, will have an opportunity to enroll in the
2019 summer driver education program in April or early May at all
middle and high schools or by using the online registration form.
The driver education course will consist of 30 hours of classroom
instruction (this includes 23 hours of theory, 6 hours of drug and
alcohol education, and 1 hour of motorcycle safety education).
The in-car phase consists of 6 hours of actual driving and 6 hours of
observation.
All Students enrolling in a driver education course offered by
Cabarrus County Schools will be required to pay a $65.00 fee to
offset the cost of providing instruction.
The $65.00 fee can be paid in cash, by money order or check and
given to the classroom instructor. All checks or money orders should
be made payable to Cabarrus County Schools.
This fee must be paid during the classroom instruction phase.
Students will not be scheduled to complete the driving phase if they
have not paid the $65.00 fee.
It is not unusual for the driving phase to occur three or four months
following the classroom phase. The scheduling of the driving phase
is through the classroom instructor who assigns students by age to
the driving instructors at each high school. Every attempt is made to
drive students by age, oldest to youngest from each class. Students
will be notified by a phone call from a driving instructor to schedule
their behind-the-wheel instruction.
Upon completion of the 30 hours of classroom and 6 hours of in-
car instruction, each student will be given a North Carolina Driver
Education Completion Certificate indicating that the student has
satisfactorily completed a course approved by the North Carolina
Department of Public Instruction. This certificate is then presented
to a designated school official where the student is enrolled to
receive their North Carolina Driving Eligibility Certificate. Note: The
Driving Eligibility Certificate, is only good for 30 days from the date
entered on the certificate. A $5.00 fee will be required to renew the
certificate.
Home school students must contact the Division of Non-Public
Schools (919-733-
4276) in Raleigh to
receive their Driving
Eligibility Certificate.
Students who
have received both
certificates and meet
the age requirement
can obtain a provisional
learner’s permit
through a D.M.V.
Licensing Office.

driver education should
be directed to Robert
Kluttz at 704 260-
