HRHS Student Named to All-American
Marching Band
Congratulations to Samantha Barringer, a senior at Hickory
Ridge High School, who has been named a member of the 20132014 U.S. Army All-American Marching Band – the first student from
Cabarrus County to receive this honor!
Samantha will perform during halftime of the All-American Bowl
in San Antonio, Texas, at the Alamodome.
She was selected through audition to be one of only 125 high
school students (from more than 1,300 entries) to participate.
The U.S. Army All American Bowl is the premier high school
football game in the nation. Produced by All American Games, this
Bowl features the nation’s top high school senior football players
and marching musicians.

NCHS Receives Jimmie Johnson
Foundation Grant
Northwest Cabarrus High School has received a $65,000
Champions Grant from the Jimmie Johnson Foundation.
Mike Jolley, principal, Northwest Cabarrus High School, and Tim
Farrar, principal, Northwest Cabarrus Middle School, along with
current and former students from each school, accepted a check
from the Foundation at an awards ceremony on Nov. 5th at the
NASCAR Hall of Fame.
The grant will be used to repair and improve the track, which
is located on a tri-school campus shared by Northwest Cabarrus
High, Northwest Cabarrus Middle, and Charles E. Boger Elementary
Schools, impacts the healthful living standards of more than 2,000
students in addition
to Northwest
Cabarrus community
neighbors.
Earlier this year,
the school’s grantwriting team, led
by parent Angela
Beaver, won a
Cabarrus County
Parks Department
Matching Incentive
grant to help fund
the track repairs.
ECHS Repeats as Top School in Local
Food Drive Competition
For the second consecutive year, students at the CabarrusKannapolis Early College High School came in 1st place in the
Carolinas Student Hunger Drive competition for the small school
category.
ECHS students collected an average of 22 pounds of food per
student for a total of more than 5,000 pounds.
ECHS student Cody Braden was named one of two Food Lion
MVPs of the Drive and will receive a $250 scholarship.
The annual competition, which is sponsored by the Carolinas
Chapter of the Student Hunger Drive, benefits the Metrolina Second
Harvest Food Bank. The six-week drive is modeled after an effort
that started in 1986 in Davenport, Iowa. Since beginning in the
Charlotte area in 2010, students have collected more than 385,000
pounds of food.
In addition to the Early College, Cabarrus County high schools
participating were A.L. Brown,
Cannon School, Cox Mill, Hickory
Ridge and Northwest Cabarrus.
Schools from Mecklenburg
County and York County also
participated.
