t. Augustine, FL: Palencia Elementary School’s class
of 2018 presented their legacy gift to the school on
Friday, March 29 th in a ceremony that was held at the
school, under the flagpole, at 1:00 pm. The gift is an 18 th
century ship’s anchor, recently discovered off the coast of St.
Augustine. After undergoing restoration and preservation in
Gainesville, the anchor is ready to be displayed.
Past PES PTO president Laurel Madson spearheaded the
campaign to find a special gift from the class of 2018, who
began kindergarten at PES when the school opened its
doors in 2012, making them the first class to begin and end
their elementary education there. “This is something that
the students can come back and see in 20 years and it will
represent the mark their class made on this school.”
PES Principal Catherine Goodrich and St. Augustine Lighthouse
& Maritime Museum Division Director Brenda Swann spoke
at the dedication. Upwards of 30 PES class of 2018 alumni
returned for the ceremony. Representatives from the school
district and school faculty members took part in the event as
well. Members of the press were invited to attend and should
contact Laurel Madson with any inquiries.
