6. BE A LAMPLIGHTER WHAT WE BELIEVE: You have a unique mission in this world, something that Hash- em needs you, and only you, to accomplish. When a person is attuned with that special mandate to uplift the world in her unique way, when her actions are rooted in this individual power, and when her energy and passion for doing good is contagious to others - that is being a Lamplighter. And when we are Lamplighters, we hold the power to light up another - to nurture his inherent spark, amplify his voice, and reveal his latent passions, talents and capabilities so that he, too, will take up the torch -- and become a Lamplighter. For a little light goes a long way. WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE AT LAMPLIGHTERS YESHIVAH: • • At Lamplighters, children learn that they are unique and needed by others and G-d. We believe that every child is capable of being carrying out his or her own mission in his or her own way -- and this belief colors the way we speak, teach and interact with every student. We nurture our students by creating environments in which chil- dren rely on each other to accomplish a collective goal. When children participate in purposeful and necessary work, they feel important and needed. “To light a soul, one only has to awaken and uncover the holy spark within, to bring it out from hiding, and the soul will automatically take flame.” — The Rebbe Rashab (5th Lubavitcher Rebbe) on becoming a lamplighter • We inspire Lamplighters by teaching responsibility, love for order, coordination, concentration and indepen- dence within a miniature “real world” that they create for themselves in a classroom. • Teachers are not just facilitators of learning, but ‘mashpiyim,’ role models of integrity, commitment, and pas- sion for learning. • “ASPIRE/INSPIRE”: In our multi-age classrooms, elder children serve as leaders to the younger; younger children are inspired by watching the work of older children. • UPLIFT community initiatives - students, families and staff join together to volunteer, bring joy and uplift the spirits of our greater community. • Lamplighters invites collaboration with other schools and shares our tested curriculum and best practices with others. 19
