TIPS FOR PARENTS
Timing matters. As exciting and as emotional as it can be, the coaches and the club owners are at work. Approaching the club owner or the coach while they are working is not always the ideal time to get the answers to your questions.
Consider utilizing the 24-hour rule. Wait 24 hours prior to approaching or asking the club owner or coach specific questions about their performance. Waiting 24 hours allows the emotions to settle and provides a better opportunity for open dialogue. Most club owners and coaches are more than willing to answer any questions, so be sure it is presented in a manner in which they can provide you the most informative answers.
Respect boundaries when communicating. The club you selected is a business, therefore, communicate using standard business methods. The club owners will define the best form of communication, so respect their protocol. Texting and social media may be convenient, but they are not a standard method for effective communication.
Choose positivity, lead by example. If you’ re ever unsure about a club decision or something involving your child, avoid airing concerns with other parents. These conversations, while well-intentioned, can unintentionally impact the team spirit and your athlete’ s experience. Instead, be a role model and team player by bringing questions or concerns directly to the club owner or director. Open, respectful communication helps everyone thrive.
Keep conversations about other children and other clubs to yourself. You never know who is sitting behind you at a competition. Sportsmanship and common courtesy teach children vital lessons in respect and integrity.
