You matter to us . . . A Q & A with student Tara Houser Where are you from? I was born in Greensboro, NC, but currently reside in Deland Florida. What schools did you attend? North Carolina State University What degrees do you have? B.S. Business Management As a child, what did you want to be when you grew-up? Either a veterinarian or an astronaut. Did you become what you wanted to be? I was admitted into the Pre-veterinary program at NC State, but after working at the vet school for a short period of time I decided I wasn’t cut out for working with hurt / sick animals in that manner. I don’t regret getting a business degree or anything I have learned over the years, but I’m ready to do something different with my life. What is the most powerful saying that you remember (Quote, proverb etc.) that has kept you motivated? Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”… I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to repeat this to myself over the years and in how many different activities. Why did you decide to attend American College of Applied Science? The curriculum was exactly what I was looking for and it was a primarily online program. I liked that the program included externships and residencies to provide a hands on aspect to the program. The program was convenient and fit in well with my schedule. I was able to continue working with my husband in our business while completing a master’s program. What do you like most about American College of Applied Science? The faculty seems to be invested in the student’s education. It is often difficult to engage students in online learning discussions which I think stems from not wanting to say the wrong thing. Somehow, both the faculty and the students have made me feel very comfortable expressing myself in the forums. I look forward to seeing what my classmates post and always seem to get something out of everyone’s posts. What is your passion? Almost everyone from the school could tell you that I love small terriers with big personalities. My husband and I recently purchased some acreage in Deland, Florida and we are looking to begin a rescue for small terriers. I would like to work with our local shelters to be known as the person to call when a Jack Russell, Rat, or Fox Terrier shows up. Our goal will be to train the dogs in basic manners, teach them how to live in a home environment, and then find matches that meet their big personalities so their adoptions will be successful. What is unique about you? That’s a funny question, because what has always made me unique is what has brought almost all of us to ACAS… a huge love for animals. So I can’t really use that! So I would probably say its my creativity in business. My husband and I have the very first retail mobile truck accessory company in the country. It was so difficult to launch because the vendors just didn’t get it. I had to write letter after letter after letter to get vendors to allow us to purchase. They didn’t understand how we could do it without being a brick and mortar store. They are very glad they finally listened to us. http://www.amcollege.us Panther-Mag.indd 9 9 10/29/13 11:59 AM
