Make your own activity packs for your child. The $2 shop has colouring books, pens and many other things for different ages. Write each childs name on the pack/bag and everytime you go to access take the bags. This way kids are easily amused and excited to finish colouring in a picture or finishing an activity with you.

So its easier to take the bag home while at the $2 shop pick up one small toy each the child can take home or leave with you, let them decide. Try activities that you can do with your child. If the child becomes frustrated your bag offers a number of other things they may enjoy more so have a few options for them. Interact with them, be focused and most importantly enjoy this time. When not with your child (if monthly access or longer) you can use this time to make up a few different bags that you can rotate or just add to the bag you have. This gives you a positive thing you can do even when they are not with you. Gifts are fine but remember you're not Santa, the kids are there to see you and be excited to see you.

Many parents make the mistake of bringing gifts to every access and over a short time the kids words to their caregivers are how excited they are to see what gifts they will get and this can result in a negative being noted. Make at home cookies in different shapes, icing becomes a fun paint so bring small containers of coloured icing. The kids might like to make some for siblings or caregivers so be supportive of this. This opens the door for positive reports as well. You can take these to supervised access if you pre-make them at home and allow to cool along with the different coloured icings.

Remember to use new clean paintbrushes for the icing that can also be brought at a low cost or iceblock sticks to paste the colours on. If icing becomes thick or to hard, warm it up by sitting jars in boiled water or microwave, most supervising places have a kitchen where you or one of the staff can do this. Always ask first and be sure to run your activities past the supervisor first. Other food decorations can also be picked up at a supermarket and store well. Place in smaller containers so you are only taking a few each time and they will last a lot longer.
