Soon after independent Texas joined the United States , Anderson County was established in 1846 with the town of Palestine as the county seat . The original center of commerce for the town developed around the Anderson County Courthouse square with an industrial area just to the West along Wells Creek . In 1872 , a new commercial area sprung up and grew rapidly about a half mile away from the courthouse , to service the needs of the new railroad . The original industrial area and courthouse square were locally referred to as “ Old Town ”, while the new area became known as “ New Town ”. Today , the Main Street District stretches about one mile and includes both the Old Town and New Town areas . With time , the areas have further segmented so now there are 4 “ neighborhoods ” in the District all with distinct vibes and specialties .
