CHEROKEE TRACE SAFARI: Cherokee Trace Safari is a wildlife park that is open year-round. However, factors such as weather may affect hours of operation. The 300-acre preserve is home to more than two dozen exotic and endangered species. Enjoy a self-guided drive from the comfort of your own vehicle. No pets are allowed inside the preserve. HERITAGE CENTER OF CHEROKEE COUNTY: The Heritage Center of Cherokee County features exhibits showcasing the history of Rusk, the county seat, and the greater Cherokee County area. Exhibits include Caddo artifacts from the area, Texas State Railroad, Rusk State Hospital, local businesses and schools, as well as the timber industry. Admission is by donation. The museum, located at 208 S. Henderson St. in Rusk, is open Saturday and Sunday or by appointment.

JIM HOGG STATE PARK: The Jim Hogg State Park is a 178 acre recreational park that features a memorial to its namesake, James Stephen Hogg, the first native-born governor of Texas. Nestled among the pine trees, this park also features a dog-trot cabin, a replica of that in which Hogg was born. There are picnic sites, a playground and a 1.4 mile loop trail making this an ideal location for hiking, picnicking or wildlife observation. The park is located at 334 Fire Tower Road in

KILLOUGH MONUMENT: The Killough Monument marks the site of an Oct. 5, 1838 massacre of 18 people. Victims included Isaac Killough, Sr. and members of his extended family. A stone marker near the memorial obelisk tells the sad story of what happened to the Killough family. The monument is located approximately 20 minutes northwest of Jacksonville on County Road 4402.
LAKE JACKSONVILLE: Lake Jacksonville offers public campgrounds, a beach, swimming pier, boat launch and newly constructed restroom facilities. The camping facilities include enclosed shelters and RV pads with water and electricity. The campground, boat launch and fueling station are located on the south end of Byrd Road in Jacksonville.
