STORY BY PENNYLYNN WEBB
The first Saturday of October, Palestine turns pink to raise cancer awareness and to raise funds to provide grants for diagnostic / medical procedures in our community. In the past 14 years, Paint Palestine Pink has raised $ 304,800 – all of which has benefited local residents.
Paint Palestine Pink began in October 2010 with the Paint Palestine Pink Festival & Education Seminar. Funds were raised for providing mammograms to uninsured and underinsured women and men. Over the years, the scope of provision by PPP has gradually increased to include screenings for all types of cancer. It has grown into a 501( c) nonprofit and donates 100 % of its funds locally.
The organization is run solely by volunteers. The team Paint Palestine Pink team includes Gerri Peoples, Tara Kinabrew, Kevin Watts and Justin Harris.
Peoples invites everyone to come out and get involved this year.
“ Wear your best pink and come join the fun,” Peoples said.“ Or come cheer on our walkers. Cancer affects everybody. Some of our grant recipients are the first to sign up and walk or volunteer for this event. These people have had life changing events occur in their lives and still show up to help every year.”
