PALESTINE Memories of 1948 - Photographs of Jerusalem | Page 106

A fresco by Yusef Amairi, Dura, 2012 The story of Majed Abu Sharar is an exception in this book, because we did not meet him: Majed was assassinated well before the idea for this collection came to mind. But we thought his presence seemed necessary, because his story is so representative of a whole generation of militants that has been decimated. We were able to write it thanks to the memory of all those who had surrounded him, loved him and been with him at different times in his life. Majed’s children, Samaa, Salam and Dalia, trusted us and put us in touch with the people we interviewed in the Palestinian territories and in Jordan. Based on these interviews, we followed Majed’s path, and have reconstructed some stages in his life, some aspects of his character, while trying not to betray him. The result is a portrait made up of exchanges, moments of joy and sadness, of involvement, participation and trust, of values taught… in addition to the words Majed left behind him like traces of his thoughts. In Dura, near Hebron on the West Bank, we met his sister Latifa; Latifa’ son, A’adi Abu Sharar; Abdel Aziz Al Sayed; Akram El Sharif and Mohammad Abu Saleh. In Fuheis aⁿd in Amman in Jordan, Nazih and Nina Jada, Mohammad Abdelhadi, Haifa Irsheid, and ‘Abd El Fatah El Kalkili. In Santiago de Chile, Imad Jada, Palestinian Ambassador to Chile. The story of Yussra, Majed’s elder sister, could be included based on Samaa’s interview with her a few years before she died. 104 Memories of 1948
