Football Fever keeps Texans warm this winter

Kicking off the new year with a review of the 2022 football season
Texans love football and while the Friday night lights have dimmed , many of us are excited about the Super Bowl . This edition of Palestine Magazine features our annual EndZone Review . Sports Writer Juwan Lee has recapped the 2022 season highs and lows for the Palestine Wildcats , Westwood Panthers , Elkhart Elks , Frankston Indians , Grapeland Sandies , Oakwood Panthers and Cayuga Wildcats .
This season , Palestine Head Coach Lance Angel became the first person in program history to lead the Wildcats to four consecutive playoff berths . The Westwood Panthers reached the playoffs for the first time since 2015 . The Frankston Indians became the first team in school history to reach the playoffs in three straight seasons . The Cayuga Wildcats clinched their first district championship since 2016 and the Oakwood Panthers were a game away from their first state championship appearance since the 90 ’ s .
We introduce the community to Gary Richards Pennington , a local play-by-play announcer who has been in radio for five decades , covered the Palestine Wildcats and is currently the voice of the Westwood Panthers and the LeTourneau University Yellowjackets . We also introduce you to Chase Calloway and Russell McClendon and their quest for “ doing whatever makes you happy ” through a joint venture called The Journey HQ and congratulate Coach Robert Loper , a legendary East Texas basketball coach with a career spanning 50 years . Columnist Chris Keller , owner of Pint and Barrel Drafthouse , serves a tasty history of an old German favorite ; Smoked Beer . And Chef Simon Webster cooks up some Spring dishes from the garden just in time for Palestine ’ s annual Dogwood Festival .
