This event is a fantastic way to promote physical health , enjoy the outdoors , and start the New Year off with an East Texas polar plunge down an inflatable water slide . “ Love Thy Neighbor ”, in it ’ s second year , is a community event hosted by the Mayor who says , “ the event is put on to encourage unity among our community members of all demographics and economic status and bring awareness to our special needs , disabled , veterans , and senior citizen communities ”. The Black History Month Gala , in it ’ s second year is a newer tradition hosted by Community MPact , founded by Ernie Williams who says the goal is “ to do something special , bringing all people together in peace . We ’ re looking forward to working together with our collective community for years to come to make life better for us all ”. The entertainment scene in Palestine offers a full spectrum , from Open Mic Nights at Pint & Barrel Drafthouse , to live music at the Dogwood and Hot Pepper Festivals , weekend entertainment at local eateries , to the Wiggy Thump Festival each spring bringing in thousands of people from across the globe to celebrate a homegrown band that made it big ! In Palestine , artists , musicians , and performers are able find a stage to exhibit their skills , while local businesses and artisans get the opportunity to display their products thanks to efforts by community partners , like the Dogwood Arts Council , to bring art to the forefront of the community .
