direct comparison to Kinbote living in an insane asylum. As our final piece of
evidence, we read about Kinbote going over what happened after the ambulance
arrived following the alleged murder of John Shade. Kinbote states, “… the gun-
man gave his name as Jack Grey, no fixed abode, except the Institute for the
Criminal Insane, ici, good dog, which of course should have been his permanent
address all along, and which the police thought he had just escaped from” (295).
After Kinbote reveals that Jack Grey lived in the Institute for the Criminal In-
sane, he writes the word ‘ici’, which is not only an acronym for the institute, but
it also means ‘here’ in Italian. Through not capitalizing ‘ici’, Kinbote is alluding
to the word and not the acronym; therefor, directly stating that he is writing
from the Institute of the Criminal Insane.
