Charles Kinbote. Kinbote often reaches out to his neighbors John and Sybil Shade expecting to be received with open arms. Each time however, especially when concerning Sybil Shade, Kinbote is shut down. He is referred to as a“ remarkably disagreeable person.”( 1962, 25). This Kinbote character could reflect the patient. This is due to the fact that severely insane patients will often use the same excuses to get out of medicine or other activities and expect different outcomes. This reference of insanity in the book points readers in the direction of the madhouse.
Throughout the book the patient talks of a Dr. Nattochdag. It says the doctor was“ the head of the department which I was attached to”( 1962,24). This could be referring to a professor at a university and a doctor of something such as English. On the other hand, in this mental hospital there are departments categorizing patients by mental illness, the head of this patient’ s department is in fact Dr. Nattochdag. It is also mentioned that Nattochdag is seen every day. This is, once again, akin to the therapist that the patient sees daily, sometimes more than once. At the same time, as per usual with this book, it is possible to see the head of the department every day in meetings or simply in passing at a
