For fame, notoriety… The chance to claim a printed work that you could kick-
start your career from later … Any number of things, really. I just don’t believe
you’re the mastermind behind this Kinbote. You’re just too … different. I mean,
I find it highly unlikely that a young woman like yourself would create such an
abominable person to be their new identity.

It’s not like I’ve completely become him. And we’re not that different.

He is an older man, an insane king from a distant land, a woman-hater!

We all have a dark side. True, I exaggerated his beyond my own, and true, I
don’t share everything with him, but we have many similarities. For starters,
we’re both obsessed with the same scholarly subjects. My father’s poem even
mentions my “prizes won / In French and history” - subjects Kinbote is very well
versed in (44).
