The Duffer brothers have stated that the scene in season one, Chapter One when Will runs into the shed was an intentional homage to a similar shot in E. T. In season one, Chapter Two, many nods to E. T. were present. Chapter Two is largely about the developing friendship between Mike and Eleven. Similarly, E. T. is largely about the growing bond between E. T. and Elliott. Along the same line, both Mike and Elliott keep the presences of another being staying in their house a secret from their parents. The Duffer brothers have stated that Eleven’ s introduction to suburban life, and the comedic situations that come along with the introduction was inspired by the similar introduction and comedic situations that E. T. had on Earth. Season one, Chapter Seven contains a bike chase scene where the kids are being chased by agents, which recalls E. T.’ s famous chase scene. The Duffers were unsure about keeping such an obvious reference to an iconic moment in the final cut. They eventually decided to keep the scene in the final cut because it did move the plot along and was not unmerited. When Mike makes over Eleven in season one, Chapter Four, many recall the scene where E. T. is dressed up by Elliott’ s little sister, Gertie.
