LANDSCAPE 2020 - JO YORK painting above: “Forged by Ice “ Part of a series of paintings inspired by Sutton Bank, which was formed by the movement of vast ice sheets. 610mm x 610mm Multi-layered acrylics and mixed media on canvas. Jo is a painter that loves to experiment and play with the images she creates. It seems that her subconscious plays not only an active part, but also an essential role in her creative process. Not unlike many creatives, the subliminal part of the brain is constantly absorbing the physical surrounding, putting it into a deep seated memory bank for future use. It’s when the marks on a flat surface begin to sparkle with life, one experienced by the artist, that the creative translations from memory are realised and seen. Almost as if the painting is making itself, just as nature seems to reproduce itself over and over again the same, but slightly different and original each time. This subliminal ‘way of working’ has been known by artists for centuries. It is still one of the most essential elements in creative thinking and creation. It is also the avenue that stimulates the viewer of the art that has been created. This interaction becomes an essential part of any painting, as viewers discover new things, never seen by any other individual, (and in some cases even by the artist that created the Art in the first place).
